BAS organizes the workshop “Two years of General Data Protection Regulation. Are we ready?”

BAS, in association with APDPO (Portuguese Association of Data Protection Officers), will organize the workshop “Two years of General Data Protection Regulation. Are we ready?”, which will take place on 10 May in Lisbon.

The objective of the workshop is not only to guide organizations that have not yet prepared their adaptation to the General Data Protection Regulation, but also to give a brief analysis of the work that has been developed by the community and national legislators, since the entry into force of the regulation, in May 25, 2016.

The training shall be conducted by Cláudia Monge and Jane Kirkby, partners and lawyers at BAS, who have been providing advice and training in the area of Data Protection for several years. There will also be an APDPO representative to share his experience with the participants.

Two years in review – What we did to get here

More than a challenge and a ‘headache’, the GDPR is an excellent opportunity for entities and agents to assess how they deal with the activities that involve the processing of personal data and how they process this information internally. It is time to implement compliance policies with the new rules, but also to organize files and renew contact with many customers.

BAS intends to share the experience acquired not only with organizing its own structure, but also with the support it provides to numerous companies.

Context

The European Union has granted two years between the entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation and its full implementation for companies and entities to adapt to the new rules. It’s a little more than a month away.

On the 25th of May of 2016 the Regulation (EU 2016/679) of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data entered into force, repealing Directive 95/46/EC of 24 October 1995, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These new rules have posed numerous challenges to all entities and agents whose activities involve the processing of personal data.

Considering that the full implementation of the Regulation was set for 25 May 2018, all entities had two years to identify the changes necessary to comply with the new data protection regulation and its implementation, including the adoption and implementation of new security measures.
